Captain III Sean K. Kane is in his 28th year of service with the Los Angeles Police Department. Captain Kane was appointed to the Department in March of 1979. He promoted through the ranks of sergeant and lieutenant attaining captain in January of 1999.
Upon promotion to captain, he was assigned to Van Nuys Area. In April 2000 he was assigned as the Assistant Commanding Officer, Democratic National Convention (DNC) Planning Group, and upon the success of the DNC was advanced to Captain II, as the Commanding Officer of Continuing Education Division. In April 2001 he was advanced to Captain III and selected as the first Commanding Officer of Critical Incident Investigation Division. In February, 2004, Captain Kane became the Newton Area Commanding Officer. In July, 2006, Captain Kane transferred to Devonshire Area as Commanding Officer.
Captain Kane's education includes a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice from California State University, Sacramento, and a Master's Degree in Public Administration from the University of Southern California (USC). He is also a graduate of California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Command College and the Federal Bureau of Investigations' National Academy for Law Enforcement in Quantico, Virginia. Captain Kane is also a 2001 graduate of the Southern California Leadership Network sponsored by CORO.
Captain Kane has also attended numerous specialized emergency management courses hosted by the California Specialized Training Institute in San Luis Obispo, and the Emergency Management Institute in Emmitsburgh, Maryland. A sampling of those specialized courses of instruction includes Terrorism, Earthquake, Hazardous Materials, Managing Sustained Operations, Military Support to Civil Authorities and Long Term Recovery. Captain Kane is a member of the board of directors for the William H. Parker Memorial Foundation (www.lapdfoundation.com).
He maintains a teaching credential and is a member of the California Peace Officer's Association, Peace Officer Association of Los Angeles County, Society of Police Futurists, International Association of Chief's of Police (IACP), and the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF). Captain Kane also maintains alumni membership with the FBI National Academy, POST Command College, University of Southern California (USC), and California State University, Sacramento. Captain Kane enjoys traveling, vehicle restoration, sailing and scuba diving.
